ABOUT US

About Us

Big Rock Candy Mountain Resort is named after an astonishing caramel and chocolate fudge colored mountain, located on historic Hwy. 89 next to the Sevier River just north of the quiet town of Marysvale, Utah. This mountain was whimsically named “Big Rock Candy Mountain” after Harry McClintock wrote a catchy little tune about a hobo’s paradise.

Harry “Haywire Mac” McClintock, a brakeman who worked on the Rio Grande Railroad, frequently traveled through Sevier Canyon and noticed the mountain on his travels. In 1928, he recorded his now-famous song. To add to the “Big Rock Candy Mountain” appeal, in the summer of 1929, local residents placed a homemade sign with McClintock’s song title on a wooden post at the mountain’s base. Ken Olsen, one of these men, also put up another sign titled, “Lemonade Springs,” next to a nearby natural spring, referencing another line in the song. For almost 100 years, the name of the appealing yellow mountain has been “Big Rock Candy Mountain.”
